The rood-loft of Limoges'
cathedral is one of those
édifices of the Renaissance
upon wliich sculpture lias
been literally lavished.
It would be difiicult to point
out in France, a work of art

Limoges' rood-loft are alto-
gether enticing and charniing.
Nowadays the exécution miglit
would be wanting. The sculp-
tor would begin by making
a model in clay, take a cast
of it and then copy it slavishly,
obtaining thus a dryness of
exécution, and a costly and
luborious finish to which are
gracious foliages of Limoges
We intend giving a few more
of the panels of this rich rood-
loft, the young artist to whom
we owe the ahove design ha-
otliers.

Le jubé de la cathédrale de Limoges est un des édifices de la
Renaissance où la sculpture est, on peut le dire, vraiment
prodiguée.
Il serait difficile, en effet, do signaler en France une œuvre
aussi riche, aussi abondante et en même temps de meilleur
goût. On y constate, pour ne parler que de la sculpture, un
faire particulier, une main savamment exercée, et, soit que l'ar-
tiste ait été seul à décorer l'édifice, soit qu'il ait été secondé par
d'habiles élèves, on remarque partout une homogénéité parfaite,
une subordination intelligente. Partout le ciseau a fouillé la
pierre avec délicatesse et sans effort, et l'on voit que ces ara-
besques élégantes et fines sont trouvées au bout de l'outil, sans
poncif et sans dessin préalable. Aussi, tous les bas-reliefs du
jubé de Limoges ont-ils une allure qui entraîne, une facilité qui
séduit. — On pourrait de nos jours faire plus correct peut-être,
on n'y mettrait pas, croyons-nous, la même naïveté de bon aloi,
le même charme entraînant. Le sculpteur commencerait
d'abord à faire un modèle en terre qu'il coulerait en plâtre et
copierait ensuite servilement sur la pierre; de là une sécheresse
d'exécution et un fini pénible et coûteux auquel on doit préférer
les rinceaux gracieux et faciles de Limoges. Nous continue-
rons h reproduire quelques panneaux de ce riche, jubé; le
jeune artiste à qui nous devons ce dessin nous en promet
d'autres.
