Every bit of the sculpture ornameuting this state shield
is a valuablc spécimen of the Italian taste at the best epoch
of the Renaissance. — Mostprobably this shield was used in some
of the splendid pageants of which the rulers of the Italian
cities were so lavish at that time and during which immense
triumphal cars paraded through thestreets and piazzas, bearing
personages representing pompous scènes borrowed from mytlio-
