The paper is a brief biography of the Polish art historian, the Rev. Professor
Szczęsny Dettloff, founder and long-time chair of the Department of Art
History at the University of Poznań. Professor Dettloff was a Roman
Catholic priest and started studying art history rather late, graduating from
the University of Vienna, where he wrote his dissertation with Max Dvorak.
After World War II, despite his age and problems with the communist
authorities, he continued his research on the art of Veit Stoss.
