A GROUP OF BYZANTINE COINS
FROM LEBANON
The author of this article has purchased a group of 44 coins in March
1991 in Cambridge, Great Britain. When bought, the coins were very cor-
roded and covered with grey patination. External observations suggested
that they might have come from a single place (a hoard). The seller pointed
out Lebanon as place of origin, although it is also possible that they came
from Syria and traveled to the U.K through Lebanon.
Most of the coins were chemically cleaned (by the author) what en-
abled their examination and classification. The coins were divided into
two groups: the first - earlier group, containing 36 coins and the second
- later one, with seven Byzantine coins and one Islamie, originated from
eastern Anatolia.
The first group contains mainly large, bronze follises of Anastasius I,
Justin I, Justinian I, Justin II, Maurice Tiberius, Phocas and Heraclius
with Heraclius Constantine. The earliest objects from the reign of
