XXXII. EUBOEA (CHALCIS)

Chalcis—the great port on the narrow straits of the Euripos, was one of the great
Greek trading cities of early Hellenic times. At first, like Eretria, she relied on the
local purple fisheries for her wealth, but she soon expanded—chiefly to the north—
Chalcidice—and to the western Mediterranean.

At the end of the eighth century Chalcis and Eretria were notable enough to set
the Greek world by the ears during their petty squabble of the "Lelantic Plain".
But her sea power was over by the beginning of the sixth century. It had passed to
Aegina and Corinth.

At no time did Chalcis take any interest in the eastern Mediterranean and she
seems to have had no dealings at Naucratis.

The following object is probably from one of the Mycenaean tombs excavated by
Papavasileiou in 1902. It is so labelled in the Museum, but is not mentioned in his
Oi 'Ap-^aioL Td<j)ol tt]S XaX/aSos.
