Mr Peel, 151, Strand, exhibits the improved Cleveland
and East India hunting-saddles. The latter are models of
lightness and adaptation to the exigencies of a tropical

climate. These specimens, are of excellent workmanship
and very tasteful in design. The various manufacturers
of leather in Bermondsey have contributed specimens of
leather in various states of preparation, from the rough
hide to the finished article. The more finished specimens
exhibit a fine grain and great softness, and show what
progress tanning and leather-dressing have made since
fiscal regulations have ceased to interfere with the develop-
ment of trade.
A very curious specimen of leather dressing comes from
Canada, being the skin of a whale dressed and cut into
boot legs. It forms a stout strong leather. T. Holmes,

of Anlaby-road, Hull, exhibits the hide of the walrus, or
sea-horse, dressed in a similar manner, and some applica-
tions of the material as coverings for polishing wheels.
The same exhibitor has some well-prepared heads of the
animal, which were brought home by Captain Gravil from
the Davis Straits fisheries.
The entire collection of articles in leather is very credit-
able to English skill in saddlery and harness work.
