Sources for the history of art history – digitized (under construction)
The holdings of the special subject collection, Art History, of the Library of Heidelberg University, contain a comprehensive and impressive collection of original editions of sources related to art history and the theory of art.
The documents cover the entire period from the 17th up to the 20th Century, and have been written by renowned researchers such as Johann Joachim Winckelmann, Gottfried Semper, Heinrich Wölfflin and Jacob Burckhardt. A focus of the collection is on ground-breaking works which laid the foundations for the establishment of Art History as a discipline in the 19th Century. These works, which are central to the historical development of Art History, will be digitalised and made freely available via the Internet.
All titles in this collection are contained in the local online catalogue HEIDI, and can therefore be searched for in the online catalogue of the SWB (Südwestdeutscher Bibliotheksverbund) and via artlibraries.net – Virtueller Katalog Kunstgeschichte.
An overview of the digitized titles can be found here.
