sia buono il terreno con l'edere spello o rado o
tenero a reggere il peso della muraglia. Per-
ciocché sé ella li porrà in spiaggia, si debbe avver-
tire che le parti di sopra con lo aggravare non
spìngano , o che le parti di lotto, sé per lorte si
movell'cro, non si tirino l'altre addotto. Io vor-
rei che la parte dello edificio, eh' è base a tutta 1'
opera, Iurte lermillima e da tutte le piarti grande-
mente fortificata. Se il sito sarà nella sommità
d' un monte, o egli vi li dovrà alzare da qualche
banda, o vero spianando la punta del monte, si
avrà a pareggiare. Qui è da considerare, che noi
doviamo eleggere di far quello, (avendo pur ri-
spetto alla dignità,) che si polla fare con manco
e più modella spesa e fatica, che sia polhbile.
Forsè farà a propolito (pianare una parte della
cima, o 1' Erta del pendio, allargandola, dimi-
nuire. Per il che fu molto savio quello Archi-
tettore, chi egli si forte, che diede perfezzione ad
Alatro, Città di Campagna di Roma polla sovra
laisoso monte. Perciocché egli procurò che la
baie o della fortezza o del tempio, la quale oggi
sola vi si vede, essendo rovinati tutti gli altri edi-
ficj che v' erano, forte murata, e fortificata di
sotto con i pezzami tfellì e (laccati dallo {pianato
della cima del monte. Ed è in quella opera quel
che io lodo grandemente: cioè che egli pole lo
angolo della pianta da quel lato, onde il monte
pende più ripido, e fortificò quello angolo con
grandmimi pezzami ammanati l'uno sopra l'altro,
de i frammenti oltra modo grandi, e operò nel
congiugner le pietre con modella spesa, che Io
edificio apparirti- ornato. Piacquemi ancora il
consiglio di quello Architettore, che non avendo
pietre a bassanza, fece per reggere il peso del
monte, una (carpa di spessi mezzi cerchi, metten-

But how high this Eminence ought to be raifed
for each Platform, Inali be shewn in due Time,
when we come to treat of that Subject more par-
ticularly, and not summarily as we do here. It
is certain every Situation lliou'd be made Urong,
cither by Nature or Art. And therefore it is
notamils to follow their Method, who advise fir st
to try the Goodnesi of the fiirth by digging in
several Places at s me Distance the one from the
other, whether it be firm or loose, or soft, fit or
unsit to bear the Weight of the Wall. For if it
Hands upon a Descent, we must have a Care that
the upper Part does not lie too heavy and break
down the lower; or that the lower Parr, if any
Accident lliou'd lhake it, does not pull the upper
down along with it. I wou'd have this Part of
the Building, which is intended to be the Kalis of
all the rest, particularly llrong and tightly knit
together inali its Parts. If the Seat be npion the
Summit of a Hill, either it lfiou'd be raise'd where
it is not even, or else be made level by plaining
away the Top. But here we are to consider,
that we lliou'd always chuie that Way (the)' Hill
with a due Regard to the Dignity of the Work)
which is leali troublcsome and expensive. Per-
haps it may be proper to pare away some of
the Top of the Hill, and enlarge and add tss the
Sides. For which Reason that Architect, who-
ever he was, shew'd a great deal of Contrivance,
that built AUttro, a Town of the Campagna di Room,
seated upon a Rocky Hill : sor lie so ordcr'd it,
that the Foundations of the Citadel or Temple
(whatever it was) which are all that now remain,
the Superllniciure being quite demolilh'd, lliou'd
be [imported and fortified beneath by the Pieces
of Stone cut oft" in plaining the Top of the Reck.
And there is another Thing in that Work that I
am extremely pleased with ; namely, that lis
set the Angle of the Platform towards that Side
on which the Rock lias the moll precipitate
Descent, and fortified that Angle with huge
Pieces of the Fragments piled up one upon die
other, ami contrived by the jovning of the Stones
to make the Struflure beautiful with a very little
Expence. lam liken ile very much pleased with
the Contrivance of that other Architefl, who
