Quello che e' ne avvertiseono sé glie vero,

ticate degli Antichi, da ridertene, ma non vor-

spices. The. Ancients were & govern'd by these
Superstitions, that in making out the Lists of
their Armies, they took great Care that the Urli
Soldier had not an unlucky Name ; which was
a Rule they aliò oblerv'd in the Ceremony of
purifying their Soldiers and their Coloni--, n here-
in, the Person that was to lead the Beali to the
Sacrifice mult have a fortunate Name. And rhe
Censors, in farming out the publick Revenues and
Estates, always began with the Lake Lucrinus, re-
catile of the Lucrativeness of its Name. So like-
wise, being terrify'd with the dism.d Name of
Epidamnus, that sueh as went thither might not be
said to be gone a damnable Voyage, they chang'd
iti Name into Dyrrachium ; so likewile they serv'd
Beneventum, which before was call'd Maleventum.
Neither, on the other hand, can I forbear laughing
at their conceit, that in beginning Undertakings of
this sorts it was good to repeat certain favourable
Words and Charms. \nd there are l'onte thar af-
firm, that Men's Words are so powerful, thatthey
are óbey'd even by Beasts and Things inanimate. I
omit Cato's fancy, that Okcu v. hen fatigued may be
refreuYd by certain Words. They tell us too, that
they used with certain Prayers and Forms of
Words to entreat and besèech their Mother Earth
to give Nourishment to foreign Trees, and inch as
Hie was not accullom'd to bear ; and that the Trees
alio were to be humbly pray'd to sufiei thcmlclves
to be remov'd, and to thrive in another Ground.
And since we are got into this fbolilh Strain of re-
cording the Follies of other Men, I willalso mention,
for Diversion i-.kc, what they tell us, that the
Words of Mankind are of ludi elìcei, that Turneps
will grow incredibly, if when we Low them we at
the same time pray them to be gracious and lucky
runs, our Families, and our Neighbourhood. But
if these be so, I can't imagine why the !i: lllieo-root
mould, as they say, grow the filler sor be tag curii
and abided whets' it is town. But let us leave this
idle Subject. It is undoubtedly proper, omitting
all these uncertain Superstjcions, to let about our
Work with a holy and religious Preparation.
