Cap. XI.
Del sar le mura con varie cose,
del modo dello intonicarlc, delle
spranghc e de rimedi] loro, e della
antichissima legge degli Arcbitct-
tori, e de' rimedi) da schisare i
pericoli delle Saette.
OI abbiamo trattato del legittimo
modo del murare, con che pietre s'
inalzi e con che calcina si muri:
Ma avendoli a maneggiare diverse sor-
ti di pietre, alcune le quali non si murino
con la calcina, ma con loto, e alcune altre
che si commettano infra loro senza intriso di
sorte alcuna, Et essendovi oltra di questo alcuni
altri modi di edificare; che co' Ripieni soli,
e alcuni che con le corteccie sole si finiseono,
e simili ; ne tratteremo brevissimamente. Le
pietre che si anno a murare con terra ; bisog-
na che siano e quadre e molto aride, e a
questo non è cosa alcuna più commoda, che i
mattoni, o cotti o piuttosto crudi, ben secchi.
Il muro fatto di mattoni crudi è molto atto
alla sanità degli abitatori : et esiendo contro
a'fuochi sicuriiìimo ; non è anco molto com-
molTo da Tremuoti : Ma il medesimo, sé e'non
si sa grosso, non regge alle impalcature. Per
questo comandava Catone, che vi si tirassino
alcuni pilastri di pietra, che reggellino le Tra-
vi. Sono alcuni che desiderano che il loto
con che anno a murare, sia limile al Bitume :
e credono che quello sia ottimo, che messb
nell' acqua, si risolve adagio, e che malvolentieri
si spicchi dalle mani, e che si riserri molto,
quando si secca. Altri lodano più il renoso,
perch' egli è più trattabile. Quello si fatto la-
voro bisogna di fuori vestir d'una .crosta di
calcina, e di dentro, sé ti piace, di gesib, 0 di
terra bianca. E perchè quella più adattamente si
accolti ; si debbe nel murare, metter ne'sesii
delle giunture alcuni pezzuoli di mattoni ora
in questo luogo, e ora in quelt' altro, che
sportino in suori, come dentelli ; acciocché la
corteccia meglio vi s' attenga. Le pietre ignu-
de debbono essere e quadrate e maggiori che
l'altre, salde e sermilEme, e nel murarle non
vi bisognan Ripieni : Ricercano gli ordini giusti-
slimi commettitura perpetua, e vi si debbono
mettere legamenti spcui di spranghe, e di per-
ni.

E have treated of the beli manner
of Building, what Stone we are to
chuse, and how we are to prepare
our Mortar : But as we silali some-
times be obliged to make use of other sorts of
Stone, whereof some are not cemented with Mor-
tar, but only with Slime ; and others which are
joyn'd without any Cement at all : and there are
also Buildings conlisting only of Huffing, or rough
Work, and others again only (it the Shells ; of
all these we silali say something as briefly as polsi-
ble. Stones that are to be cemented with ilimc,
ought to be squared, and very arid; and nothing
is more proper for this than Bricks, either burnt,
or rather crude, but very well dried. A Building
made of crude Bricks is extremely healthy to the
Inhabitants, very secure against Fire, and but lit-
tle affessed by Earthquakes: But then if it is not
of a good thickness, it will not support the
Roof; sor which reason Cato direfls the raising os
Pilasters of Stone to perform that Ossice. Some
tell us, that the Slime which is used sor Cement
ought to be like Pitch, and that the beli is that
which being lleep'd in Water is sloiveil in disiolv-
ing, and will not easily rub osf from one's hand,
and which condenses moil in drying. Others com-
mend the sandy as best, because it is mod tradable.
This sort os work ought to be cloath'd with a crull
of Mortar on the outside, and within, is you
think sit, with Plailler os Paris, or white Earth.
And for the better slicking these on, you must in
Building your Vail, set little Pieces os Tile here
and there in the cracks os the joyning, jutting out
like little Teeth, sor the Plaiiler to cleave to.
When the Structure is to be composed os naked
Stones, they ought to be squared, and much big-
ger than the other, and very sound, and ftrong ;
and in this sort os work we allow os no Hussing;
the courses must be regular and even, the junssion
contrived with srequent ligatures os Cramps and
Pins. Cramps are what sallen together two Stones
sideways that lie even with one another, and
