6. Fig. 4 gives a more correct representation of a relief at
the entrance to one of the principal gateways of the large city
beside the Tomb ofMidas (pnblished J. R. S., 1882, p. 9,
and Perrot AfAsT 111 p. 722). 1 cannot gnarantee the accuracy
of the cmiMceMS, the stone is so worn that 1 conld not feel cer-
tain whether the shape which the object in the priest's hand
has now taken is the intention of the artist or due to weather-
ing; hut it certainly has now this form, and ΐ think that my
original interpretation is perhaps correct. The priest is dis-
tinctly bearded. The object on his shoulders is of uncertain
shape, but is markedly in relief above the background. The
curved outline of the back is an important modiiication of the
iirst publication. The accompanying tignre is made from a
drawing which is exactly half the size of a paper impression.
The symbols on the left, 1 regard as two Syro-Cappadocian
hieroglyphics; bntthey are so different in shape from the
hieroglyphics hitherto known, that no stress can he placed
on them against a critic who donbts the existence of hiero-
