tracted through the soil to the south of this strip; (3) that
the whitish strip is continuous and systematic, and that the
whitish stuff is not found elsewhere in the section save in small
occasional patches. From these facts it is inferred that the
whitish strip coinciding with the southern face of the kerbs
has originally formed the southern face of the vallum. It is
consequently further inferred that in the batter of this strip
there is clear evidence of the batter of the face of the vallum
as originally constructed at that part.

The next portion of the section to be dealt with is that which
lies to the south of the north kerb, viz., the expansion. This
expansion measures (from the south kerb to the southern limit
of debris of the expansion) 38 feet from north to south, and
60 feet between the external limits of debris on the east and west.
Its ground plan has not been definitely ascertained. It has a
roughly laid base of large granite stones—larger, if anything,
than those forming the base of the vallum. There are no kerbs,
so that it is not possible to determine with certainty the southern
termination, but the width of the expansion, measuring from the
south kerb to the apparent termination of the stone base, is
18 feet. The height of the expansion above the stone base is the
same as in the vallum, viz., about 5J feet. The soil is the same
as in the vallum, and the layering is manifest. The dark lines as
noted in the heart of the section occur as follows:—
