and amethyst. Since the British bombardment of Alexandria, the ruins
and rubbish at this part of the shore have been done away with, so that
no further researches in this direction will be practicable.

C.—GR.ECO-EGYPTIAN LITERACY DISCOVERIES.

The past year has not been marked by any discovery of the first
magnitude, but much useful work has been done in the way of pub-
lishing the materials which have been accumulated during the years
preceding it. These are, of course, chiefly papyri, and by far the greater
number of them belong to the uon-literary class of these documents ; but
it will be convenient to mention first such literary discoveries as have
been published during the past twelvemonth.

The largest of these is the Medical Papyrus in the Bjjjishjduseuin, to
which reference was made in last year's Report. Its existence was first
announced in the Classical Review in June, 1892, and it has now been
