XVI PREFACE*

Upon the whole, my endeavour
is intended more for the Gentleman
than the Artist.—How far I have
succeeded in the several particulars,
I leave to others to determine, as-'
suring them I have spared no pains
to be both accurate and useful.

The portrait in the title page, is of
the celebrated James Stuart, Esq.
generally known by the appellation
of Athenian Stuart: this is copied
from an impression of a plate intend-
ed for his promised volume. From
a personal knowledge of Mr. Stuart
I can say, this is an extraordinarily
good likeness, which, from my re-
spect to the man, as well as to a
great artist, I beg leave to multiply.

1789.
