Slovák Painting of the Seventies and Eighties — An Attempt at an Analysis
of Its Conceptual and Developmenta! Strata

This study, concerned with the young Slovák painting
génération of the years 1970—1980, infers that its mem-
bers were faced with the problém of setting up a re-
latively new programme. They feit a lack of any sub-
stantial support in their immédiate predecessors and
traditions. However, the need of a novel orientation
could not be made up for by a simple négation
of historical precedents. The tradition represented by
the example of teachers and the then very actual Euro-
pean tendencies preserved its attractiveness and influ-

ence. Nonetheless, it was an ambivalent influence. The
artists drew on and took as their starting point prima-
rily what appeared acceptable from the viewspoint of
the determining social requirements; at the same time,
however, endeavours at preserving continuity with the
then actual créative trends (and this not solely of home
origin), also played a roie. In this way, an unusual and
even contradictory innovation of tradition came about.
A parallel, and at first sight fairly illogical action of
antithetical influences led, as a rule, to a very divergent
