L'éclat du règne de Louis XIV, le goût du grand Roi pour la
■magnificence, imprimèrent à l'art décoratif, comme aux autres
branches des arts de cette époque, un élan extraordinaire. Les
Ibmptueufes demeures royales &. princières trouvèrent bientôt
des rivales dans celles que les courtifans fe firent élever à grands
frais ; une légion d'artiftes fut conftamment employée à fatisfaire
'es goûts faflueux d'une cour brillante.
La famille des Lepautre tient une place honorable parmi les
hommes qui, par leur talent, contribuèrent à rehaufier la fplen-
deur de ce règne.
Antoine Lepaulre (1614-1691 I fut nommé architecte de
Monfieur, frère de Louis XIV. Pierre Lepautre, fils d'Antoine, fut
un fculpteur remarquable. On admire de lui, aux Tuileries, les
deux groupes d'Ënée & Anchife & A'Arrie & Pœtus. Jean Le-
pautre, frère d'Antoine, fe diftingua comme deffinateur u gra-
veur à l'eau-forte en architecture. Il a laiffé un OEuvre très-
confidérable compofé de pièces ayant trait à l'ornementation & a
la décoration. Un de nos prochains numéros donnera un beau
fpéeinien de fes Petits Va/es à entourages variés.

The fplendor of the reign of Louis the fourteenth, and the
great King's tafte for magnificence, gave the décorative as well
as the other fine arts an extraordinary impulfe. The fumptuous
royal and princely refidences foon found rivais in thofe which
the courtiers erected at great coft ; a légion of artifts con-
flantly was employed to fatisfy the expenfive tafles of a brilliant
court.
The Lepautre family holds an honourable place among thofe
who by their talents hightened the fplendor of that reign.
Antoine Lepautre (1614-1691) was appointed architect to
Monfieur, brother of Louis the fourteenth. Pierre Lepautre, fou
of Antoine, was a remarkable fculptor. One can admire in Ihe
Tuileries Iiis two groups of /Eneas and Anchifes and of Arria end
Pirtus. John Lepautre, brother of Antoine, diftinguifhed himfeli
as a defigner and au etcher in architecture. He lias left a con-
fiderable work compofcd of pièces, ail of which are connected
wilh ornamentation. The pièce we prêtent lo-day is a déco-
ration of a Gallery, and we f h all give in one of our next num-
bers a finî fpecimen of his Small Vajes with diverfified borders.
