PAR DANIEL MAROT.
Les plafonds de peinture font d'origine italienne; leursap-
P'ications furent très-nombreufes fous le règne de Louis XIV,
J caufe des reffources qu'ils offrent pour la décoration des
Srandes Salles dans les édifices privés & publics. Par les arti-
fices de la perfpeclive & la magie de la couleur, le plan fur
'^quelles fujets font peints fe trouve reculé, éloigné de l'œildu
fpeâateur, & l'efpace audeffus de fa tête augmenté, ce qui
ajoute puiffamment à l'effet général. Le plafond que nous
donnons aujourd'hui eft tiré de l'œuvre important de Daniel
Marot, architefle français, que l'impolitique révocation de
"édit de Nantes envoya dans l'exil avec bien d'autres hommes
de mérite. Il s'établit à la cour du prince d'Orange, qui fut
depuis Guillaume III, roi d'Angleterre & grand ftathouder de
Hollande. — Nous ne tarderons pas à reproduire d'autres

Painted Ccilmgs are of Italian origin. They were in great
tavour during the reign of Louis the Fourteenth, on aecount
of the facilities they offered for the décoration of Halls in
public or private édifices. By the contrivances of perfpective,
by the magy of colour, the plan on which the fubjects are
painted is pufhed back,removed from the fpe&ator's eye and
the fpace above his head greatly increafed, which adds po-
werfully to the général eft'ecL The Cciling \ve give to-day is
taken from the important vvork of Daniel Marot, a French
architeft, who, with many other talented men, was fent in
exile by the irrpolitic revocation of the edi£l of Nantz. He
eftablifhed himfelt at the court of the prince of Orange,
who was afterwards William the Third, king of England
and ftadtholder of Holland. — We will foon reproduce other
