Albert Durer, the principal
mafter of the German School,
was born in Nuremberg in the
year 1471, and died in the
faîne cily, in 1528, after
having travelled over the Ne-
therlands, vifited Venice and
Vienna, and gained the favour
of the emperors Maximilian the
Firft and Charles the Fifth. He
was pupil of his father, who
was a goldfmith, and alfo of
Maßer Wohlgemut. This laft
mafter is one of the authors
of the famous Nuremberg Chro-
nicle (1495) °^ which the
engravings are fo highly in-
terefting on account of the
coßumes of that period, and
which we will fometimes con-
fuit. Albert Durer diflinguifhed
himfelf as a painter and alfo
as an engraver on wood and
copper; he was, according to
fomeperfons, the inventor of
etching. There is much to be
faid on the life and works of
thisgreat man, we will fpeak
of his remarkable Portraits, of
the woodcuts reprefenting the
Paffion, tic, (feries of the Dé-
corative figures, Chriflian art),
ofhis Arabefques and drawings
for goldfmiths, of Iiis Triumph
of Maximilian (feries of Public
fefiivals) &c, ail of which will
be reproduced by us in fac-
fimile.— Thefe are not the only
fervices rendered to induftrial
and décorative Art by that
mafter. We have unfortunately
to lament over the lofs of a
