De finiftres prédiftions, confirmées par cette époque de trou-
bles intérieurs, de guerres civiles fans fin, qui conflitue le y." fiè-
cle, avaient infpiré au monde chrétien cette terreur religieufe
dont les monuments du temps font foi. L'an mil allait venir :
on croyait à la fin du monde. Si l'architecte délaiffait l'églife en
conftructïon, le fcribe pouvait bien abandonner fes pinceaux
déformais inutiles. Auffi rencontre-t-on très-peu de livres ornés
de cette époque. On ne connaît guère que le beau Benédiâior.-
naire de l'archevêque Kobert qui fait partie de la riche Biblio-
thèque de Rouen, la Paraphrdfe en vers de l'Écriture sainte
(Bibliothèque Bodléienne d'Oxford) & le livre del Vigilano (du
prêtre catalan Vigila). — Nous extrayons d'une Bible en 5 vol.
de l'an mil, confervée à la Bibliothèque de Strafbourg, ces
Majuscules qui fe compofent d'enroulements à têtes de monllres
8t. au fens myftique, & qui, tout en offrant les caractères de la
période carlovingienne, confervent encore les marques fenfib!es

Inaufpicious prédictions, fully confirmed by the inferior troub-
les and endlefs civil wars, which compofe the x"1 Century, had
infpired the Chriftian World with a religious terror, of which the
monuments of that time give many proofs. The year one
thoufand was approaching, and the end of the worid was
thought near. The architect abandonned the half conftrufled
church, the artifl put afide his henceforward ufelefs brufhes.
For this reafon, there are but a very fmall number of orna-
mented books from that period : as the fine Benediéiion Book by
the archbifhop Robert, now belonging to Rouen's rieh library,
a rhymed Paraphrafe of the Scriptures (Bodleian library, Oxford),
and the book del Vigilano (by the Catalonian prieft Vigila). — We
take from a Bible in 5 vol. from the year one thoufand, preferved
in Strafburg's library, thefe capital letters which are compofed
of fcrolls with monfters' heads. The myflical interweavings of
thefe pièces, though offering the marks of the Carlovingian
epoch, yet preferve fenfibly the Oriental influence. — (Unedited.)
