Cette planche fait partie du recueil intitulé : Compertimenta
pictoriis flosculis, etc., et dont nous avons déjà reproduit un
l'anneau (voy. page 41); elle donne deux sujets de Frises ou
ornements courants dont le motif est à peu près identique.
D'un culot central s'élancent deux rinceaux reliant d'autres
motifs intermédiaires, dont l'axe est figuré par le bord môme
de la planche. 11 est facile, en posant une petite glace sans
bordure le long des bords verticaux, de prolonger la composition
en la répétant par la réflexion du miroir. A ce propos, nous
devons à nos lecteurs de leur' dévoiler une pratique par nous
surprise aux maîtres ornemanistes de la Renaissance et de l'art
oriental, dans l'agréable commerce que nous entretenons avec
eux depuis longtemps. C'est précisément à cet usage du miroir
simple ou double (à angle mobile) que nous devons la plupart de
ces admirables compositions de plats et aiguières arabes, damas-
quinurcs, médaillons, entrelacs, caissons, rosaces, panneaux,
compartiments, nielles, etc., qui nous apparaissent comme des
prodiges de génie et de patience. — A bons entendeurs, salut !

Tins plate is part of a collection known under the name of
Compertimenta pictoriis flosculis, of which we bave already
given a Panel (sec p. 41). The above plate contains two subjects
of Friezes or current ornaments of which the motive is almost
identical. Two foliages spring from a central bottom uniting
other intermediate subjects, the axle of which is represented
by the plate's very border. It is easy, by placing a small mirror
without framc along the vertical borders, to prolong the compo-
sition by its reflection in the looking-glass. We have, by a fré-
quent intercourse with the Ornament-workers of the Revival of
arts and Oriental art, surprised a practice which we now unravel
to our readers. It is prcciscly by the use of the simple or double
mirror (with moveable angle) that we are indebted for almost
every one of thèse admirable compositions of Arabian dishes
and ewers, damaskeening, modillions, rosaceous, panels,
compartiments, enamelled works, etc., which seem prodigics of
genius and of patience. — Let those who need profit by it !
