Presque tout le travail du champ de l'arme a été fait au
poinçon et au ciseau. Le centre ou ombilic porte une tête de
satyre barbu à cornes de bélier en ronde bosse, tandis que la
frise montre, au milieu de trophées d'armes, quatre médaillons
d'empereurs romains. L'espace entre la partie centrale et la
frise est divisé par quatre compartiments dont les compositions
représentent: Curtius se jetant dans le gouffre; Horatius Coclès
défendant le pont; Mutius Scévola se brûlant le poignet devant
Porsenna, et enfin Manlius Torquatus.

Nearly the whole working on the shield's ground lias been donc
through the punchcon and chisel. The centre, or ombilicus,
bears a bearded satyr's head with horns in high-relief; whilst
the frieze shows four medallions of Roman emperors, separated
from each other by warlike trophies. The room between the
central part and the frieze is divided in four compartments, the
compositions of which represent : Curtius leaping into the gulf;
Horatius Codes defending the bridge; Mucius Scœvola burning
his hand and, lastly, Manlius Torquatus.
