Les dimensions de cette pendule de la fin du xvtit" siècle sont
relativement assez restreintes; elles sont de 47 centimètres en
hauteur sur 28 centimètres en largeur. On n'a pas visé, on le
voit, à produire une chose monumentale, et la décoration, en
rapport avec les dimensions de l'objet, est d'une simplicité de
bon goût. La forme générale est sévère et digne, sans être froide,
et l'exécution présente le fini vraiment précieux qu'on retrouve
sur la plupart des pièces de cuivre ou de bronze fondues et
ciselées à cette époque. Plusieurs choses sont ici à signaler : le
cadran est en émail, tandis que le compartiment, disposé à sa
base et couvert en partie par des festons, est orné d'une glace
aujourd'hui, mais très-probablement autrefois d'une sorte de
laque noire ou de couleur foncée. La frise disposée dans le
socle est ajourée pour ôter au socle une lourdeur qu'il aurait
pu avoir sans cette addition décorative. Les enfants, placés
d'angle, se terminent par une gaine ou console. Un vase, d'où
s'échappent des festons tombant sur le fronton qui circonscrit
le cadran, termine cette pendule d'une belle simplicité et qui
peut sans aucune hésitation être offerte comme un modèle. Les
cotés latéraux de la pendule sont ornés au centre d'une décou-
pure où l'on remarque, comme il la frise du socle, des fleurons
intercalés dans des cercles. C'est à l'obligeance de M"" Gabrielle
Dclesscrt que nous devons de pouvoir reproduire ce remar-
quable petit meuble dans les pages de l'Art pour tous.
