Au moyen âge, les coffrets n'étaient parfois, comme celui-ci,
que de bois et ne prenaient de valeur que par le précieux, la
délicatesse et le bon goût des sculptures dont ils étaient cou-
verts. Le coffret ci-dessus, très-simple comme matière, est en
revanche des plus riches comme travail : il est en bois de. châ-
taignier, avec anses, serrures et charnières de fer. Il est divisé
par bandes dans lesquelles s'inscrivent des cercles ou médail-
lons contenant des animaux et des figures. Les écoinçons sont
ornés de feuillages. La partie que nous présentons est le dessus

In the Middlo Ages, chests were sometimes, likc the actual
one, made of simple wood and had no value but for the rich-
ness, fineness and good style of the carvings wherewith they
were covered. The above coffer, very common as to its matc-
rials, is by way of compensation one of the richest as far as
the working goes : it is of chesnut-wood, with handlcs, locks
and hinges in iron. It is partitioned by bands and in the divi-
sions are sculpted circles or medallions which contain some
beasts or figures. The angle-ties are ornamented with foliages.
