Cette broderie naïve, mais non dépourvue de mérite et de
charmes, est sans doute l'œuvre patiente d'une dame, d'une
châtelaine aux goûts artistes. Quoi qu'il en soit, elle intéresse
à plus d'un titie. Elle est d'abord âgée de près de quatre siècles,
et aux yeux d'un très-grand nombre c'est là une qualité incontes-
table. Ensuite elle est d'une fort belle exécution. La bordure
est tout entière en soie rouge au petit point de tapisserie.
Les pleins sont bien combinés avec les vides et on aime à
regarder ce peuple d'animaux, élément principal de la bordure.
La figure centrale est composée de satyres, de figures hu-
maines, d'anges ailés et d'animaux d'espèces différentes for-
mant un ornement courant.

Tins pièce of embroidery, simple but devoid neither of merit
nor of charm, is doubtless the patient work of a Iady, of the
noble and artist-like mistress of a castel. Be that as it may,

ries old or thereabout, and in the mind of a great many peo-
ple this is an incontestable quality. Then its exécution is very
fine. The entire border is of a red silk and in tapestry short
stitch. The ornaments and voids stand in good contrast, and
one likes to see the rampant beasts which aie the chief élément
of the border. The central part is composed of satyrs, human
heads, winged angels and animais of différent species, which
forin a running ornamenlation.
