XVIe SIÈCLE. — fabriques italiennes. ARMES DEFENSIVES. — BOUCLIER DIT DE CHÀULES-QUINT,
(COLLECTION DE M. SPITZER.) en fer repoussé.
1938 bis
Ce bouclier ou rondache en fer repoussé est avant tout une
arme historique, et il est à peu près certain qu'elle a appartenu
à l'empereur Charles-Quint. La scène qui occupe tout le champ
de la pièce représente bien ce monarque recevant la couronne
de fer. Le puissant empereur, déjà vieilli, est agenouillé, tête
nue, devant une Minerve ou une Bellone; il s'appiète à recevoir
la couronne qu'une sorle d'ange voltigeant lui apporte. Une ville
importante se dessine dans le fond, tandis que la bordure du
bouclier, ornée de figures en relief et d'ornements damasquinés,
sert de cadre à la scène principale, dont les personnages sont
très-saillants.

This buckler or round ►hicld in drifted iron is ahove ail a
historical arm, as it bas heen, very near to a certainty, owned
by Charles the Fifth. The scène which occupies the whole fiehl
of the object, représenta that very monarch, presented with the
iron crown. The mighly Emperor, rather old already and
knceling before a Minerva or Bellona, is on the point of re-
ceiving the crown which a kind of flying angel is seen bringing
down. An important cily is sketchcd in the back-ground,
whilst the shield's bordure, embellished with figures in relief
ar.d embossed ornaments, serves for a frame to the main scène,
whose personages are very projecting.
