Nous ignorons quel est lo sujet de cette tapisserie, que nous
montrons surtout pour son encadrement. M. Alfred Darcel,
directeur actuel de la manufacture des Gobclins, croit y voir
un des épisodes de l'histoire d'Artémise. Une lettre R, dans la
lisière de la tapisserie, laisse supposer qu'elle fut exécutée pour
Marie de Médicis, veuve de Henri IV, par Raphaël de la Planche.
Cet artiste travailla aux Gobelinsen 1630. Cet atelier des Gobe-
lins est antérieur à la fondation royale de 1602, qui n'est, à,
proprement parler, qu'une réalisation des faits existant déjà.

We are unable to state what is the subject of this pièce of
tapestry, which we give more espccially for its bordering. Mr Al-
fred Darcel, the présent Director of the Gobelins Manufattory,
considers it represents one of the épisodes in the story of Artc-
misia. A lettor R, in the list of the tapestry, favonrs the sup-
position that it was executed for Mary of Medici, widow of
Henry IV, by Raphaël de !a Planche wbo worked at the Gobe-
lins in 1630. The workshop of the Gobelins was established
before the royal foundation of the Manufactory in 1662, which
was, correi tly speaking, but the public acknowledgmcnt of
facts already existing.
