Même au moyen âge les artistes italiens affectionnaient les
Vierges assises, et l'on doit avouer qu'ils ont souvent produit
ainsi des œuvres remarquables et d'un grand caractère. La sta-
tuette ci-d?ssus est d'une exécution savante et d'un beau senti-
ment, mais les vêtements, un peu heurtés et fouillés par place,
attirent trop l'attention.
On préférerait voir la mère du Sauveur enveloppée d'un
de ces vêtements austères, mais gracieux pourtant, que le
mjyen âge lui donnait touj jurs. L'enfant divin est aussi un peu
maigre.

Evon during the middle âges, Italian artists were înclined to
sculpture seated figures of tlie Virgin, and we must willingly
acknowledge that they have often executed very remarkable
works, liaviug a grand character. The exécution of the above
statue is elever, the feeling earnest, but the sharp outlines of
the drapery here and there too dceply eut catches too mtich the
eye. One would like too see the Saviour's Mother robed with
those severe but gracious garments with winch the artists of the
middle âges always vosted lier. The divine CUild is also ralhi-:
mcagroly executed.
