XVIe SIECLE. — école française. LE CHRIST EN CROIX,
peinture sur émail. PAR JEHAN LIMOSIN.

Jolian Limosin, frère ou plutôt neveu du grand Léonard, a
peint sur émail, de la fin du xvi" siècle au commencement
du xvne. — Son plus grand émail connu est très-certai-
nement celui-ci, réduit par notre gravure aux deux tiers de
l'original. 11 le fait connaître sous un jour tout nouveau, celui
d'un réalisme puissant, ne présentant ni incorrection dans le
dessin ni trivialité dans l'expression. — A côté du Christ, un
portrait du temps, il faut remarquer l'admirable expression de
douleur et de résignation de la mère.

Jehan Limosin, the hrothor or more properly thenephewof the
celebrated Léonard, was an enamel pàinter who lived at the end
of the xvi'1'. and at the beginning of the xvii"'. century. His
largest production is very certainly the enamel figured above
on a scale of two thirds. It shows the artist in quite a new
light; very rcalistic, without any bad drawing, nor any vulgarity
in expression. — Near Christ, a portrait of the epoch, the
admirable expression and résignation of the Mother claims due
attention.
