Le premier de ces ivoires personnifie la Musique ou le Son ;
!e second, la Poésie ou la Parole. — Ils paraissent l'un et
J autre remonter aux premiers siècles de l'ère chrétienne, et
''s sont encore païens comme style. Les physionomies sont
*ssez vulgaires, les corps trapus et lourds, les draperies tour-
mentées, — et on peut dire qu'un réalisme sans noblesse est
e caractère distinctif de ces deux figures de dyptique. — Mais
Ce sont là d'excellents matériaux et de curieux éléments pour
°Us ceu" qui s'occupent des arts de l'antiquité, en écrivent
°u dessinent l'histoire.

They seem to belong both to the first centuries of the Christian
Era, for the style is yet pagan.
The visages are vulgar ; the bodics, heavy and clumsy; the
draperies ungainly and ono may say thatthedistinctive character
of thèse two ligures of a diptych is a low kind of « naturalisme ».
They are bowever curious and interesting as docu-
ments for the authors who studying ancient art, write its
history.
