Clodion affectionnait les scènes où figurent souvent des
satyres au milieu de leur famille; et un grand nombre des
terres cuites de l'habile sculpteur présentent un sujet analogue
a celui-ci. La gravure reproduit l'original dans ses dimensions
Pactes, mais le graveur a craint de laisser voir les contours
habiles de l'ébauchoir, cernant chacun des personnages et déno-
tant chez l'artiste un faire particulier dans le modelé, une
adresse et une science extraordinaires. On sait que les terres
cuites de Clodion sont en très grand nombre, et celle-ci, pour
^re pOU connue, n'est pas une des moins belles.

Clodion was much inclined to model compositions representing
satyrs in the midst of their family, and many of the terra cottas
executed by the clever sculptor reproduce scènes having a great
analogy with the one shown above. The engraving reproduces
the exact dimensions of the article, but tho engraver has not
dared to show the clever hand'.ing of the boaster outlining each
figure and indicating the particular process of the artist's modcl-
ling as wcll as remarkable cleverness and science. It is uselcss
to say that Clodion's terra cottas are very numerous, but this onc
although not much known, is nevertheless amongst the finest.
