IXe SIÈCLE. — école allemande. LETTRES INITIALES MANUSCRITES.
L'original de ces curieuses lettres initiales est détruit. Il existait, do longue date, à la biblio-
thèque de Strasbourg, où plusieurs artistes ont pu en prendre copie avant sa destruction. C'est
grâce à l'une de ces copies que nous pouvons reproduire ces lettres du ixc siècle, remarquables à
plusieurs titres, et surtout précieuses au point de vue de l'histoire de l'art en Europe. La gra-
vure est exécutée aux deux tiers des originaux.
The original of thèse curious lctters have been destroyed.lt was in Strasburg library during
âges ; many artists copied thèse letters before they were burnt. It is thanks to one of thèse copies
that we are able to reproduce thèse letters dating from the ix"1 century. They are remarkable at
many points of view and particularly interesting as regards the history of Art in Europe. — Two
thirds of full size.
