— La partie la mieux réussie de cette belle porte cochère est à coup sûr la menuiserie et la sculpture
du bois. L'arcade dans laquelle les vantaux s'attachent est richement ornée aussi, mais d'une façon moins
heureuse et qui trahit une influence étrangère, naturelle à Cambrai, où l'Espagne domina près d'un siècle
durant, jusqu'en 1677. Il y a de la lourdeur et une certaine excentricité dans le motif du tympan, dont la
coquille ne s'harmonise pas bien avec les rinceaux d'acanthe dessinant le linteau. Le tailleur de bois devait
être plus assujetti à la tradition française que celui de la pierre et il semble bien, en tout cas, qu'ils ont été
contemporains. Notre gravure a été faite d'après une photographie prise en mai 1888.

gelungen. Der Bogen, an welchen sich die Flùgel anlegen, ist gleichfalls reich verziert, aber von weniger
glûcklicher Form und es ist ein fremder Einfluss bemerkbar, sehr natiirlich in Cambrai, wo Spanien fast ein
Jahrhundert lang, bis 1677, herrschte. Es ist eine gewisse Schwere und Absonderlichkeit in dem Motiv der
Fûllung vorhanden, dessen Muschel nicht gut mit dem Laubwerk von Acanthus harmonirt, welches die
Oberschwelle hervortreten lâsst. Der Holzschnitzer hàtte von der franzôsischen Ueberlieferung mehr
beherrscht sein miissen als der Steinhauer und es scheint, dass sie jedenfalls Zeitgenossen gewesen sind.
Unser Blatt ist nach einer Photographie, die im Jahre 1888 aufgenommen wurde, hergestellt.
— The most successful paît of this fine gâte is undoubtedly the workmanship and the sculpture of
the wood. The arcade which frames the leaves is also richly decorated, but in a less happy manner, which
moreover, betrays a foreign influence not surprising at Cambrai which was under the Spanish rule for
nearly a century, up to 1677. There is a certain heaviness and a certain eccentricity in the motif of the
spandrel ; the conch which ornaments it does not harmonise with the scroll of acanthus-leaves that décorâtes
the lintel. The wood-carver must have clung to the French tradition more closely than the sculptor, and it
seems likely, at any rate, that they were contemporaries. Our plate lias been drawn from a photo taken in
May 1888.
