the filtre ; and two pounds of the wood, and a propor-
tionate quantity of common falt'and water be ufed in the
coloured folution, a lake will be produced that will ftand
well in oil or water, but is not fo tranfparent in oil as
without the feed-lac. The lake with Brazil wood may
be alfo made by adding half an ounce of anotto to each
pound of the wood; but the anotto muft be diflblved in
the folution of pearl-afhes.

LEAD, Black, is ufed to make pencils; not being
fufible, it is cut into form. It is a mineral fui generis.

Price in powder id. per oz. Pencils 6d. each.

Lead, Red, or MINIUM, is a calx of lead of a
vivid orange colour, or yellowilh-red; which colour it
acquires by the very flow calcination to which it is ex-
pofed. It is chiefly brought from Holland.

This colour would be very valuable, if it was dur-
able i but, like every preparation of lead, it is liable to
become black, It requires a moderate proportion of
gum-water, and to be frequently ftirred up while ufing,
as its weight inclines it to fettle. Price 6d. per oz.

Lead, White, is kept in the colour-mops under
the name of Nottingham, and ufed for coarfer purpofes.

Price in bladders 3d. each.

LITMUS, is a blue pigment, procured from archil,
by adding to the archil, (previoufly bruifed by grinding,)
quick-lime, and fpirits of urine; the mixture being eva-
porated becomes at length of a due confiftence. It is
chiefly brought from Holland.

This colour is liable to change towards crimfon, by
the leaft approach of acids.
