There are feveral kinds dug up in England, and it is
probable more might be found on examination.
They are cheap colours from one penny to two-pence
per ounce, and are divided in the colour-fhops into yel-
low, brown, red, Roman, {lone, bright, &c.
OILS are a very principal object of a painter's care,
as they are fo intimately mixed with the colours* and
have unqueftionably much influence on them.
Linseed Oil is ufed to colours of deep fhades, but
injures the lighter ; it is fometimes rectified by expofing
it in a bladder to the fun, &c. which renders it more
tranfparent. Some painters reject it totally.
Price 6d. per pint.
Nut Oil is very much in ufe, it is not fo fubjeci to
change the colours. Price as. per pint.
Poppy Oil is by fome preferred above all, as being
very clear, and tranfparent. Price 4s. per pint.
Drying Oil, is linfeed oil boiied with fugar of
lead, litharge, or red lead, &c.
As thefe fubftances are by no means of any benefit to
the oil, we advife a very cautious ufe of this article. In
general it is ufed to pictures painted in hafte, or in damp
weather, &c. which we have remarked to be deficient
in durability. Price from 7d. to 2s. per pint.
Small bottles of oil may be had at 3d. or 4d. each.
ORPIMENT, is a colour, whofe properties, as we
have before obferved, fhould forbid its ufe.
PALLETTES are of various fhapes, ufed to hold
the colours on the hand while painting.
