Varnish, white, is ufually made of gum fandaric5
and gum maftich, diffolved in fpirits, left to fettle two
days, then {trained through a linen cloth, and, after
{landing fome time, the clear poured off, and bottled
for ufe.

The more curious artifts diffolve the two gums fepa-
rately; and having made a feparate varnijb of each,
mix them occafionally, as their work requires a ftiffer or
fofter varnijh.

But for the bejt white varnijh more gums are required 5
viz. Venice turpentine, gum copal, elemi, benzoin,,
anime, and white rcfin.

Varnish for prints: Take ifinglafs four ounces,
feparate it into fmall pieces, boil it in a quart of brandy,
or other ftrong fpirit; when it takes the confidence of
a fcrong glue by being a little expofed to the air, it will
anfwer the purpofe. With this glue, while hot, wafh
over the print as quick as poffible, and let that (land for
a day or fo to dry well: wafh it over again in the fame
manner, and afterwards brum it over at fuch a diftance
from the fire that it may not blifter: do this alfo two
or three times. Varnifh it with white varnifh, and let
it ftand 5 afterwards varnifh it again. If it mould at
any time be foiled by flies or the like, you may wafh
it with a fponge and water, which will clean it.

The print mould be previoufly mounted: i. e. parted
on a cloth, and fecured by a ftraining frame.

VERDITER ought to be procured from the lapis
armenus, prepared by grinding and warning: but this
kind is very rare*
