of them, except ultramarine, carmine, and vermilion,
which fhould be bought in powder, as in that (late they
will be beft preferved: the lead touch of thefewill give
the picture a eaft : mix up no more of thefe colours
than you want for prefent ufe, which muft be with a
drop or two of nut-oil on your pallette, with your pal-
lette-knife.
To get the colour out of the bladders, prick a hole in
the fide of each, and prefs it till you have fufheient on
your pallette for prefent ufe ; as what remains will dry
and fkin over, and fo become ufelefs.
A great variety of colours are ufed in oil: the follow-
ing are thofe moft frequently felected.
Whites. Flake white, Nottingham.
Yellows. Yellow ochre, Naples yellow, &c.
Reds. Carmine, Lake, Indian red, Light red, Ver-
milion, &c.
Greens. Terra-verte; greens are ufually compo-
sitions.
Browns. Cologne-earth, Brown-pink, Umber, raw
and burnt
Blues. Pruffian-blue, Ultramarine, Terra di Sienna*
Blacks. Blue-black, Ivory-black.
Purples, are compofitions.
A quantity of colour being fqueezed out of its bladder,
on the centre of the pallette, work it into a proper form
(with the addition of what oil is requifite) by the pal-
lette-knife, and tranfplace it into its ftation on the upper
part of the pallette; beginning with the lighter colour
next the hand. From thefe originals, compofe a row of
fecondary teints, by mixing them together in fuch pro-
portion
