Among the variety of entertainments offered by the
arts, few if any are more pleafing than thofe drawn
from the fcience of emblems. We therefore propofeto
prefent a feries of fubjects (intermixed with hiftorical
compofitions,) reprefenting the branches of the polite
arts, and their principles j architecture, sculp-
ture, design, he. he. will in their turn be exhi-
bited under characteristic figures, till the fet is com-
plete. Thefe will be at whole length. To introduce
a variety, the Seafons, the Virtues, the Pafiions, &c.
will be given in the continuance of the work at half
length. The firft plate in the next number will be,
a figure of spring. Our readers will forgive the
remark, that thefe fubjedts are the firft ever offered to
the public, and engraved from original defigns made on
purpofe.

Explanation of the figure of Painting.

This noble fcience is here reprefented as a majeftic
female figure, holding in one hand the implements
of her art, a pallette, pencils, &c. with the other
pointing to a picture. She is reprefented with a
bandage over her mouth, in conformity to the fenti-
ment of Quintillian, who fays Picture is a fiknt
and uniformaddrefs, yet penetrates fo deeply into our
inmoft affections that it feems often to exceed the pow-
ers of eloquence; as Beauty is ufually confidered as
the object of painting, the picture reprefents the God-
defs of Beauty ; the variety of the fubjects comprized
by this arr, as well as its pleafures, are hinted at by
the flowers; and in the back ground is feen the
preparation of the materials ufed in it. If every day
