BROWN S.
Spanish Brown, a coarfe dull colour, chiefly ufed
by houfe-painters, but may be employed in fome parts of
landfcapes, to make variety, &c.

' Brown Ochre, is a cheap colour. Vide Ochre.

Brown Pink. Vide Pink,

Cologne Earth. Vide. Cologne Earth*

Spanish Liquorice, diluted with water, makes a
brown colour ufeful for variety.

Terra di Sienna, in its native {late.

BUCKTHORN BERRIES, furnifh three kinds of
colours. Being gathered green, dried, and fteeped in wa-
ter, a yellow; when ripe, sap green, vide fap-green j
when fully ripe, and ready to drop from the branches, a
purple.

BOXES for colours, are of many various contri-
vances according to thepurpofes of thofe whoufe them.
The general principles to be regarded in conftrucling
Boxes, are, that all articles of a fimilar nature fhouid be
collected nearly together ; colours in oil by themfelves 5
colours in water by themfelves, &c. Boxes complete to
hold a variety of colours, varnifhes, &c. are fold from
2l. 2s. to 2I. 1 os. each. Portable boxes, are much
cheaper, but are ufually contrived by their proprietors.

CALCINATION, difFers from mere burning, in
that the latter leaves the fubffcance burnt, of a black

colour.,
