LECTURE I.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I
_I_ HAVE now the honor to
open a second series of Discourses on the Prin-
ciples os the Arts of Design : In this Ledhire
I propose more immediately to elucidate the
nature and general properties of Perspective.
The recollection of the candor I have expe-
rienced on former occasions, ssatters me with
the hope of your equally cheerful attention to
the subjedts of our present Series; and I wil-
lingly persuade myself, that our late recess has
rather enlivened than enervated your desire
aster a further acquaintance with these highly
pleasing Studies, and that, as their principles
become more familiar, they will likewise prove
more agreeable, and satisfadtory.
We have heretofore had occasion to admire
that wonderful contrivance, by which we survey
not only objedcs around us, but also those re-
mote ; to admire that astonishing apparatus
which communicates to the mind those infi-
nitely various ideas received by the sense of
