CEREMONIAŁ AND ARCHITECTURE.
THE ORIGIN OF PAPAL CEREMONIAŁ
AND ITS INFLUENCE UPON ARCHITECTUREi
The papai seat in Vatican is m /olo or&e i/errarum prne/elur
praece/^h pa/n/hs. Its status is due to several centuries of unbroken tra-
dition, which, in its immutability, defined and sanctioned the position of
papacy. This involved the normative role of both the papai pałace and
the ceremoniał performed there.2 To understand the residential order
determined by architecture, it is necessary to find the functional princi-
ples resulting from ceremoniał organisation. Studies of court ceremoniał
prove extremely hełpful in this respect.3
„Ceremony is a solemn act or rite involving selected people, taking
place in a specific space and at a given time, following a set plan and ob-

s 2000 Gottfried Kerscher published a book on the interdependence of court organi-
zation, ceremoniał, and architecture: Architektur ais Reprasentation. Spatmittelalterliche
Palastbaukunst zwischen Pracht und zeremonielłen Voraussetzungen: Avignon, Mallorca,
Kirchenstaat, Tubingen-Berlin 2000. His interest focused on the late-Avignon period and
the period after the popes' return to Romę (2^ half of the 14^ century). The main issues
