Hain Copinger 8659 : Proctor 9645, typo 4; Blades, Caxton nr. 44. William Caxton 's
edition of the polychronicon in English, the first published. Ono of the finest spe-
cimen of Caxton’s press.
,,Few of Caxton’s books have excited more interest and research than the ,,Polycronicon“.
It appears to have had its origin with Roger, Monk of St. Worberg, in Chester, who, about
the beginning of the 14th Century, made an extensive compilation in Latin from several of
the old Chronicles and Works on Natural History then in existence. Ralph Higden, of the
same monastery, who died before 1360, amplified this compilation, entitling his work, ,,Poly-
cronicon“ : and this judging from the numerous copies still extant, had a very extended popu-
larity. In 1387, Trevisa, Chaplain to the Earl of Berkeley, translated the Latin of Higden
into English prose. An account of Trevisa, with a history of his works; is given by Dr. Dibdin.
in Typ. Ant. vol. I, page 140, who, however, has not included in his list Trevisa’s English
translation of the Gospel of Nicodemus (Addit. MS. 16 165). Nearly a century later, Caxton
revised the antiquated text of Trevisa, which, together with a continuation of the history to
the year 1460, was finished on July 2nd 1482, and printed soon after. Caxton entitled his
continuation ,,Liber ultimus“, and it is most interesting as being the only original work of
any magnitude from our Printers pen“ (Blades II p. 124 f.)
Although incomplete, as the great majority of the copies known, this is a very desirable
copy containing 11 leaves of the table, the complete text of Liber I—VI, a large part
of Liber VII and 7 leaves of the Liber ultimus genuine throughout. The missing parts of the
text are supplied by manuscript.
Some of the margins contain manuscript notes in old E n g 1 i s h language, some
of them are accompanied by curious drawings, all by a 15th century hand.
All Caxton books are excessively scarce.
