From the above evidence it is clear that whereas Koelle was wrong in supposing
that before his time Vai writing was known only to its inventors and users, he was sub-
stantially correct in his statement regarding the date of origin of the script. In the light
of the confirmatory evidence of Wilson and Wynkoop, it may be taken as an assured
fact that the spread of the Vai syllabary was as extraordinary a phenomenon- as Koelle
considered it.
