chap, iv.] YIELD OF THE BRICK WALL.

They had been used in the building of the wall, and
ao-ain had to be broken out with a crowbar. One
of these was the middle part of a large squatting
statue, fully inscribed (plan no. 24, pi. XXIII.,
p. 350). This we found afterwards to be of con-
siderable importance. The second proved to be a
piece of a similar figure of much smaller size and
with an inscription too much mutilated for transla-
tion (plan no. 23).
The work had perforce to be brought to a close
when about a third of the eastern half of the bank
had been cut down. But though much remained to
be done we left Luxor satisfied with the unex-
pectedly large results of a few wreeks' excavation.
The Museum authorities very kindly gave us the
statue of Rameses II. and the heads of Rameses III.
and the unnamed god.
