I will now explain how the exhibition has been arranged.
On the tables in the first row we present: 1) encyclopaedias and
dictionaries 2) publications dealing with written sources 3)
materials from symposiums, international conferences and Fe-
stschrifts 4) publications dealing with architecture 5) sculpture
and 6) painting. In the second row we are showing books
conceming 1) Ancient art and Classical Tradition 2)early Chri-
stian and Byzantie art 3) Medieval art 4) catalogues of exhibi-
tions 5) Renaissance and Baroque art 6) art of the XIXth and
XX" centuries 7) the conservation of monuments, history of
photography and museum management. We are particularly
proud of the Enciclopedia dell'Arte medievale, the new edition
of the Allgemeine Kunstler-Lexikon, the Pittura italianain many
volumes, the catalogues of the Medici exhibitions and those
devoted to the art of Caravaggio, Raphael, Canova and Thor-
valdsen, the lates publications by Yale, Chicago, Princeton and
Columbia University Presses, Oxford and Cambridge Univer-
sity Presses, and Harvey Miller Publ.
Finally I would like to express my thanks to all those who
helped with the purchases and the preparation of the exhibi-
tion. The acquisition of new publications involves a lot of work
and is not confined to the verification of the contents of

libraries in the Warburg Institute and The Hertiziana or to
reading publication catalogues and reviews printed in various
periodicals. It also requires other work such as paying bills and,
the laborious checking of the resources of other libraries etc. I
would, therefore, like to thank the ladies from the financial
department, the registry office and, above all, I would like to
thank the staff of our library for their enormous efforts and
great committment.
For many years our library has been fortunate to have such
scholarlypatrons as: Dr. Jolanta Białostocka, Prof. Piotr Skubisze-
wski, Prod. Stanisław Mossakowski. H aving at their disposition very
limitted funds theypersistantly strived to buythe best publications.
Today, they still help the library by giving books or by organizing
aid from abroad. The list of books which the present Director of
the Institute gives the library each month is extremely long. It is my
plaesure to add that it was Dr. Piotr Paszkiewicz, the present
Vice-D irector of the Institute, who first came up with the idea of
organizing an exhibition of book-acquisitions.
I would once again like to express the Committee's grati-
tude to the Getty Trust and the Samuel H. Kress Foundation
for their generous gifts. All the books bought with their help
will be an invaluable asset for many years to come.

WYSTAWA KSIĄŻEK ZAKUPIONYCH DLA BIBIOTEKI INSTYTUTU SZTUKI PAN
Z GRANTÓW THE GETTY TRUST I THE SAMUEL H. KRESS FOUNDATION.*

W dniach od 15 do 22 września w czytelni biblioteki IS PAN
czynna była wystawa książek zakupionych z grantów przezna-
czonych przez dwie amerykańskie fundacje: The Getty Trust i
The Samuel H. Kress Foundation. Uroczyste otwarcie wysta-
wy odbyło się we wtorek 15 września o godz. 12. Przybyli na nie
m.in. Prof. Zbigniew Wilski, sekretarz wydziału I PAN, dwaj
pracownicy ambasady USA w Warszawie: Bruce K. Byers,
Attache kulturalny, iDennis Spencer Wolf, Pierwszy Sekretarz
Sekcji Kulturalnej oraz przedstawiciele wielu placówek nauko-
wych Warszawy. Obecni byli nadto dziennikarze prasowi i ra-
diowi a także ekipa Telewizji Polskiej. Wystawę otworzył Prof.
Stanisław Mossakowski, dyrektor Instytutu. W tym samym
wystąpieniu Prof. Mossakowski powitał gości i złożył podzięko-
wania za przyznanie granty; wyraził też wdzięczność pracowni-
kom biblioteki za trud gromadzenia książek i przygotowywanie
wystawy. Zwrócił również uwagę na znakomity dobór zakupio-
nych publikacji. Następnie zabrał głos dr Jerzy Miziołek prze-
wodniczący Komisji Bibliotecznej Instytutu Sztuki
(wystąpienie to przytaczamy poniżej w streszczeniu). Po uro-
czystym otwarciu wystawy wszyscy jego uczestnicy zostali za-
proszeni na coctail do sali im. Prof. Juliana Starzyńskiego.
Wystawę zobaczyło kilkaset osób; powszechnie została uznana
za wielkie wydarzenie a jej wysoką ocenę potwierdzają wpisy do

księgi pamiątkowej. Informowały o niej prasa: m.in. Rzeczpo-
spolita, nr 218 z 16 IX (red. T. Stańczyk), Gazeta Wyborcza, z
21 IX (red. A. Schiller), radio: Radio S, Radio Z i Radio
WAW-a, specjalną audycję dla magazynu porannego progra-
mu IV Polskiego Radia przygotowała red. Elżbieta Kollat (19
IX), telewizja: Telewizyjny Kurier Warszawski (17 IX) i Maga-
zyn Kulturalny niedzielnych Wiadomości (red. O. Braniecka,
27 IX).
Wystąpienie dr Jerzego Miziołka: „Prezentujemy w tej sali
około ośmiuset publikacji, w tym przeszło sześćset książek,
zakupionych w ramach grantów przyznanych przez dwie słynne
fundacje amerykańskie: The Getty Trust i Samuel H. Kress
Foundation. Organizując tę wystawę, która jest wyrazem wiel-
kiej wdzięczności składanej obydwu tym fundacjom, myśleli-
śmy o jak najszybszym udostępnieniu tej wielkiej ilości nowych
publikacji badaczom i studentom historii sztuki, archeologii
klasycznej i wielu innych dyscyplin humanistycznych Warszawy
i całej Polski. Mamy głęboką nadzieję, że spośród wielu tysięcy
opublikowanych w ostatnim czasie książek wybraliśmy te naj-
ważniejsze, i że wpłyną one stymulująco na rozwój badań za-
równo nad sztuką obcą jak i polską. (...)
Od 1988 r. Komisja Biblioteczna naszego Instytutu wy-
trwale czyniła zabiegi o pozyskiwanie rozmaitych publikacji
