1585 Numburg Museum T. 5 55: pilgrim's buckie shoe from the tomb of Stephen Praun,

with iron horseshoe on the heel, in Middle Eastem fashion.

1606 Thomas Dekker's The 7 Deadly Sins of London: Polonia gives him the boots.

1610 Rowland's Martin Marke-all: Ii is a Polony shoe with a Bel.

1632 Pitti Pal: portrait of Ladislas IV (1632-1648) in two-button ankle boots with Per-
sian style heel.

1640s Rosenborg Castle, 7.207 & 7.211: a pair of Polish boots, worn by Frederick III (king
1648-1670) or his brother (d. 1647); pointed toe, front of leg thigh high.
1648-68 JS 2001 p. 132, fig. 149: D. Schultz d.y oil of Jan II Casimir, King of Poland, yel-
low leather, pointed toe, ąuite high heel.

1699 Leiden, cat. of Rańties Exhibited in the Public Theatre, including: a pair of Polonian boots.
ca. 1700 Jafvert Arkiv, re Munich Nat. Mus. 162, Durian-Ress 49: man's shoe with high
covered heel, suggested Polish, but looks like nineteenth century prize-exhibition work.
ca. 1730 Dresden 1148: a pair of woman's front lace calf boots, similar heel to ?1680/1730
above.

1864 Godey's, US, p. 276: Polish boots are now worn by both young and old. They are
generally of black morocco, laced up in front ąuite high on the leg. They are bound
with scarlet leather and trimmed with scarlet tassels; some are tipped with patent leather.
re. p. 193, 5 children's Polish boots, bound with blue velvet, trimmed with blue chenille
tassels. p. 194: Polish boots with scarlet tassel. NB: both boys' are hessians, QV, knee
high, V-dip with tassel.

1865 Godey's p. 541: boy aged 5-8 years, Polish boots with black tassels (hessians), prob-
ably black patent. Aug. p. 186: Little boys and girls are wearing the high Polish boots,
pointed or scalloped at the top, and trimmed with bright coloured tassels. They are
made of fancy coloured kid, such as mauve, blue, scarlet or bronze; these colours how-
ever are only suitable for ąuite young children, older ones or young ladies wear them
of black or bronze trimmed with scarlet. p. 369: Girls' Polish boots of bronze kid with
magenta tassels. V dip shown, with tassel each side.

1866 Godey's pp. 451,453: Polish boots ornamented with red leather (peaked hessians with
light top, tassel, and centrę front with ?boss at throat; p. 435: Polish boots of brown kid
(high gloss hessians, no tassel); p. 456: Polish boots with tassels are invariably worn.

1867 Godey's p. 386: children's Polish boots of black kid (= hessians, no tassel). English-
woman's Domestic Mag; p. 547: Parisian boots in Regent St. Polonaise boots with rosette
of cord and tassels ąuite high, and the rosette on the top;
