TAILORS BOOKS IN POLISH ARCHIYES

The purpose of this paper is to present the results of the first stage of our study of
Tailors Guild Books extant in Poland, which contained sewing patterns. Up to now,
patterns from Polish Guild Books have been but marginally mentioned in litera-
turę. In 1954, Adam Glapa discussed them only generally in a short article on peas-
ant garments and published single patterns from guild books of Poznań, Wschowa
and a tailor company in Chwaliszów1. In the only extensive history of Polish gar-
ments published so far, Maria Gutkowska-Rychlewska mentioned a preserved
group of guild books from Poznań, Leszno, Wschowa, and Przemyśl, and published
single patterns from the Poznań and Wschowa books2. In 1970, on the basis of the
above publications, Jitka Stankova counted Polish books among surviving Guild
Books with patterns. The author's insufficient insight into Polish guild books led
her to erroneously upping the number Poznań books to four, dated 1499, 1533,
1577 and 17473. In many of her recent works, Irena Turnau spends some time on
Tailors Guild Books, emphasizing the need to undertake a thorough search to iden-
tify examine and publish all specimens surviving in Polish collections4.
