Mrs Titus Salt 'At Home'

The back of the dress shows the mid 1890's too; fitted bodice with a fishtail, and a
train. In cut it is very like that dress Mrs Salt wore thirteen years earlier in 1882.
Each has a smali bustle pad, and each is of tie-back construction, which gives it his
rather peculiar rear silhouette. The lower part of the rear of the skirt is stiffened with
starched muślin, and a pleated tarlatan fmishes the edge. The tie-back ribbons are
of fme silk - surprisingly fragile when compared with the robust naturę of the rest.

1 wonder if she ever wore it again, and if so when?

And what about the party? Weil it seems to have been very enjoyable. Mrs Salt kept
a notebook in which she wrote details of all her household matters, which is still in
the possession of her descendants. They do not wish to cause offence to anybody by
publicising her sometimes sharp comments on other people so I have only been
able to see the parts which the late Sir Denys Salt copied out, and which are most
tantalising, not least because he did not live locally and therefore had to guess at
some of the names. We do know that extra staff were hired in for the occasion, not
very satisfactorily, and that at least some of her own staff were dressed up: 'Gregory'
(possibly the butler) did not take generał management as much as expected. He an-
nounced guests in beefeater costume.'

'Plenty of everything - but plain roast game asked for besides game pie - these not
put in cases. One piece of pressed beef unused.' 'Gong sounded before guests col-
lected - soup cold and plates.' 'Not enough meringues because used in servants hall'
(where the family party had dined earlier). 'Fruit never offered. Pineapples never
cut. Beef tea not ready.... Forgot cheese straws - a mistake.'
Her meat and flsh order, as listed in her notebook, was as follows:

'4 Turkeys of 12 lbs

4 Couplets of Chicken

2 Leverets

2 Brace of partridges
2 Brace of grouse
6 Large soles

5 Turbot of about 5 lbs each
2 Cwt of ice

10 Lobsters of about 2 lbs each
2 % Pickled tongues for turkey
23 lb Shin beef

11 lb Knuckle of veal
19 lb Neck of Mutton
2 Pieces pressed beef,'

and we notice the large ąuantities of cheaper meats, with smali amounts of the more
showy and expensive.
