358. Page 13. Milton, a naked form, standing on a globe, advances
holding a robe in one hand and a girdle (" compasses,” Keynes) in
the other. The sun sinks behind him. A nimbus encircles his head.

Then Milton rose up from the Heaven of Albion ardorous :

The whole Ascembly wept prophetic, seeing in Milton’s face

And in his lineaments divine the shades of Death and Ulro ;

He took off the robe of the Promise, and ungirded himself from the oath of God.

“ The Spectre " sits enthroned, clasping the book of the Law.
Milton, a nude figure seen from behind, seizes him by the beard and
is about to pull him from his throne. Above, on a hill with a sunrise
behind them, a youth and four girls playing music. Below, To
Annihilate the Self-hood of Deceit & False Forgiveness.

Mr. Damon describes this as Blake dethroning Urizen, with the
“ liberated senses" dancing above. Sloss and Wallis, however,
