Inventar C der Gr. Sammlung vaterländischer Alterthümer

Karlsruhe, 1878-1934

The collection of national antiquities – the C inventory – is one of the more extensive letter inventories, with 11,480 items and numerous sub-items, and has been recorded in two volumes. It mainly contains archaeological finds that came into the collection as purchases, donations, finds handed in to the authorities and finally excavations by the conservator Ernst Wagner (1832–1920). These include the Sinsheim Antiquarium, donated in 1850, as well as purchases from the ‘lake dwelling collections’ popular in the 19th century and donations of Nordic flint tools. In addition to the archaeological finds, around a third of the collection inventory consists of medieval to modern sculptures, ceramics, gold and silver smithing, other handcraftet objects from secular and religious contexts, as well as paintings and prints.
