Cases 44-47 contain a selection of some of the largest
and finest bronzes, among which may be especially
noticed: —
(1.) Venus adjusting her sandal. Height 1 ft. 9| in.
The original motive of this figure is known to us by a
comparison of a number of extant repetitions of the same
composition. The left arm usually rests on a column. In
several instances marine emblems, such as the dolphin,
the rudder and the sail, are combined with the figure,
and in one bronze (Case 32), the support at the side
of the Goddess is covered with Pantheistic emblems.
Statuettes in marble representing Venus in the same
attitude have been found in Cyrene, in the islands of
Crete, Rhodes, Cos, and Calymnos; and the same type
occurs on the copper coins of Aphrodisias, in Caria
(Mionnet, Eecueil, m., p. 322, No. 109). The bronze
here described is distinguished from all extant repetitions
of this subject, by the simplicity and dignity of the treat-
ment, especially in the countenance, which is remarkable
for the severe beauty, characteristic of the best age of
Greek art. It is said to have been found near Patras.
For examples of similar figures, see Smith and Porcher,
Discoveries at Cyrene, p. 96. Spratt, Crete, i., p. 72.
(2.) Bacchus represented as a boy, the head wreathed
with ivy; in his right hand a spear, surmounted by a pine
■cone; on his left shoulder, the panther's skin. The head
and panther's skin have been made separately. This figure
is finely modelled ; it stands on its original base. The
metal, which is in admirable preservation, resembles in
colour and condition the bronzes of Pompeii. Height 1 ft.
